Amy: Unintentional Icon

Last night at the MTV Video Music Awards, Amy Winehouse was remembered and paid tribute to by Bruno Mars, Tony Bennett and Russell Brand. No one will forget her musical genius, but likewise, noone will forget her iconic image. Amy carved out a look that set her apart from everyone else. I get the feeling she never intended to be a style icon, but simply "did her own thing".

Nevertheless, a style inspiration she was. With her rockabilly shirts, pencil skirts and her Rosie the Riveter headscarves, some of the things she wore could so easily look awful on most, but looked quirky and original on Amy. Even Karl Lagerfeld recognised her as a source of inspiration.

Her collection for Fred Perry was released this month, and seems like a perfect way to honour Amy's style. A statement from Fred Perry said After much consideration and with the blessing of Amy's family, we have decided to release the AW11 Amy Winehouse for Fred Perry Collection. Amy was passionate and dedicated to the collaboration, and her signature style is clearly stamped across each piece. Amy's royalties and fees from both collections will be donated to the soon-to-be-established Amy Winehouse Foundation. Fred Perry will also make a seasonal donation to the Foundation."

Girls for years to come will be tottering around London in their silk ballet pumps, working a Bardot beehive and eyeline flicks and we'll all know why.
